Timer added to bathroom fan switch; saves lives and mirror condensation daily.I got this to add a timer feature to my bathroom exhaust fan. It was easy to install, is easy to use, and overall I'm very happy with it. The ticking is kind of loud which was off-putting at first, but now I kind of enjoy it. It kind of says to me "HEY, HURRY UP SOLDIER!! YOU CAN'T JUST SIT THERE ALL DAY! THE TIMER IS GOING TO RUN OUT SOON AND YOU ARE GOING TO DIE FROM THE GASES!!! MOVE IT MOVE MOVE IT!!!" <-- mine has the DI's voice from Full Metal Jacket. (fyi) It's handy for leaving the fan going a while after a shower or other events mentioned previously. Works perfectly and a very happy purchase.51 out of 2 ordered are defective. Took me several months to get the time to install these, when I did it was around 15 min. for each one. It was a simple two wire replacement; however I did have to find new 3 gang plates to handle a rectangle and two regular switches. The color is a bit off from the standard white faceplates. After a week of use one of the switches routinely freezes up and we have to rotate it back and forth before you can hear the audible clicking come back. I gave it 3 stars for ease of use, having 60 minutes, and a quick install. Without those benefits it would have gotten 1 star for only intermittently working. 3I noticed that the lock nut threads looked like the standard "1/8IP Lamp nipple" UPDATEDUPDATE: The switch hung or went to 30 minutes and was stuck "on" all day when we went out of town. I ordered another one because the electronic ones will not work with my fan circuit wiring. (neutral issue with fan vs. switch location). I will try something another wind-up timer from a different brand if this one acts up. Unfortunately, with my old house, I am not going to do a big rewire in order to use a different electronic timer. As others have noted the "lock nut" is simply too short to hold the Decorator filler plate on when used with a "Decora" style wall plate. When I got the "lock nut" to engage, the filler plate distorted noticeably. After a couple of weeks the timer began hanging up and stopping at about 10 minutes remaining.I removed the nut and plate and the timer worked OK. I noticed that the lock nut threads looked like the standard "1/8IP Lamp nipple". Sure enough the treads matched exactly. I used a 1/2" (I think) long nipple and when bottomed out in the timer, the remaining part protruded enough above the filler plate to allow the appropriate 1/8IP nut to fasten the plate. (this is _not_ the supplied nut, but the local hardware store had both the nipples and nuts) I finger-tightened the nut and it holds the plate nicely without distorting it.I have since tested the fan switch at least a dozen times and it has been working perfectly every time. I am appalled that the dates on these reviews go back to 2013 or so, so this has been a long standing issue. With this modification, the switch works acceptably. It should not have been shipped with this incorrect attaching "lock nut".1PLANNED OBSOLESCENCE. MADE TO BREAK IN A SHORT TIME KEEP LOOKINGKnobs deliberately made very thin and break in a short time at the same place. New knob is a dollar or so less than a new timer. I needed a new knob so I bought another timer.. that knob is now broken. I will never buy Woods again. I 3D printed a new knob that will not break..ever.1Nice, but not reliableI've bought several of these timer switches to control bathroom vent fans. Of the three installed, two have failed in less than one year of normal use. The mechanical spring/timer mechanism will start failing and leave the switch open (in running position.)Am now searching for a different brand to replace these throughout my home.1Great for forgetful bath fan operators I can't believe they build houses without these for the bath fan. Bought two for a new house, need another yet for a guest bath. Should have taken old ones from the house we are selling, but bought new instead. These do not have the hold on feature, that some inept operators trigger accidentally. 5I purchased two of these timers, both have issues ...I purchased two of these timers, both have issues. One stopped counting down and just hangs at same time. The cover with the timing marks didn't fit in a standard decora style wall outlet cover. The other came missing the cover all together. Very disappointing quality.1turn the knob and it shuts off better than a I've been remembering to doReplaced a pull the plug method shutoff of a outdoor wood boiler (in a shed) smoke venting fan. Works as advertised, turn the knob and it shuts off better than a I've been remembering to do. No more digs from the wife that I forgot to shut off the fan the night before.Looks well made, and was well priced. Needed a little tab bending to fit in the 4" square box cover but otherwise installed without any problems, connected it to an outlet for the plug-in fan. The decora or regular cover plate dial was a nice touch. All mechanical, no electronics, only needs a two wire connection like a regular switch. Simple and effective.Good choice for short-acting devices that you forget to shut off. I'd buy this again the next time I need a timer. Perhaps those attic storeroom lights?5Glad I bought this, and I recommend it to those who are handy.Works exactly as desired. This is not some fancy gadget that allows you to set the time to the second, while starting your car and monitoring the outside temperature and phases of the moon. It is the old, spring-wound "kitchen timer" with a switch added; instead of a bell ringing when the time is up, the switch opens, which is exactly what I needed. We had a simple wall switch to activate a gas fireplace in our new room addition. However, one evening we accidentally left the switch on, wasting a lot of gas even though we were not in the room to enjoy is. No more! I installed this device, and now we crank the timer to 60 minutes (or for the duration we wish) and when the time is up, so is the flame.I could not get the nameplate that comes with it to fit right and had to work with it to make it stay in place. (The nameplate shows the time settings so you can set the dial to the approximate time desired.) It seems the threaded collar that is supposed to hold the nameplate in place is not long enough. I am usually pretty handy with these kinds of things, so though I can't say for sure it was the fault of the hardware, I am sure enough that I subtracted one star.Glad I bought this, and I recommend it to those who are handy.4number plate to big for standard wide-switch cover platesWe replaced on of the wide-format switches in a multi-switch box.The plate with number is about 1/2 mm too wide and tall to fit in a standard US switchplate (the wide ones) for a flush fit. I had to trim all four sides, and then round the corners after trimming, to make it fit.One could make it a "surface mount," with the pate over the switchplate. This would be a good option for the standard, toggle-style light swichplates. In my case it would be necessary to find a cover plate with wide-switch openings and one toggle-switch size opening. I found it to be so close to the size of the opening that one corner would drop down, even with the center nut secure, when turning the knob.Of course, this is just an annoyance. The timer works fine, but be prepared to spend a while with whatever tool you have (I used a bench grinder, but a file, coarse sandpaper, an angle grinder would work if you have something to hold the piece in while working on it, i.e., a vise). If Asian or European switches are a little taller and wider than US ones, great. However, if you're in North America, here's your warning.3Good bargain, but tricky installationGood bang for the buck on this item - nothing fancy for under $10. But installation was challenging in my receptacle. The fact that it was larger than a simple switch behind the wall, crowding the switch box, seems normal for this type of product. Also, there is no clear way to attach a ground wire, which I am told is fairly common in wall switches. After I gave up, and called in a friend with more electrical experience, we got it installed, with one minor flaw: the dial-post is upside down. He pointed out to me in the directions where it was at best confusing, at worst completely wrong. So after you orient it, put the dial on the post to confirm the notch is facing up before screwing everything back in. Rather than unscrew and cram everything back into the wall again, I opted to use a sharpie to fix the issue.3Fails after 1-1.5 yrsI bought four of these units from 2017-2018. For the first year of operation I was pleased with them. HOWEVER, a year later I am very disappointed. All four units now tend to stick from time to time, halting the countdown function and just staying on. I ll return to a switch hours later to find it has stuck on and have to shut it off manually. Meanwhile an international unit my dad installed 25+ years ago never displays this behavior.Based on failure to perform its sole intended function, I cannot recommend this item.1Easy install, works well, but... NOISY Very easy to install in a regular receptacle. Just to cable and that's it. Came with all you need, several options for the plate... But very, very, noisy - check the video... So you never forget to turn it off manually ehehehehe 3
