Customer Reviews

Great drive, high speed for a traditional hard drive, long warrantyWorks great ... I normally get WD Black 4TB, but they were out when I needed a hard drive for back-ups. I prefer the black, or this gold drive because of the longer warranty and higher speeds compared to their other drives. I would rather spend a little more money and get the longer warranty and the 7200rpm. I have been using WD Black drives for 6 years and I haven't had one go bad yet (fingers crossed). I have only replaced drives (= added drives, still using others) because I wanted a bigger drive since I've been using the Black drives. My son now has his two old 2TB along with a big 8TB because he fills them up with Steam games. I have three old 2TB and 4TB, and an 8TB.The Gold drive also has a 5-year warranty so I feel confident it will also be a great drive. I paired this with a Rosewill hard drive enclosure with a built in fan for cooling. So far so good :)5No WD Warranty For These OEM DrivesBought two of these drives. These are OEM drives and therefore do not carry a Western Digital warranty as confirmed by WD support via the serial numbers. These are OEM despite the fact they come in sealed foil bags with WD labels. I was expecting the WD five year warranty. Not good. Very very disappointed.1BEWARE of OEM versionsI have purchased 7 of these drives over the past 3 years 5 from Amazon and 2 direct from Western Digital. Two of the drives from Amazon were OEM versions which are being sold illegally without a warranty. In both cases I caught the problem because I immediately tried to register them with Western Digital. In both cases Amazon replaced them at no cost to me except for some lost time. Most of the drives I've purchased from Amazon where new and under warranty, but sometimes a third party seller will try to make an extra profit by shipping an OEM drive. "Woops, my mistake." Don't buy it. I've had three drives fail under warranty and WD replaced each them for the cost of shipping the old unit to them. The WD Gold is an excellent product. I've bought 7 so far and will by more.5One StarTerrible sounds. There is no guarantee in my region. Squeaky sound when you turn on and the sounds of bumps. Buying this hard drive I was hoping for high quality. And if we consider that I am in now Uzbekistan. It's terrible for me. Fortunately Amazon came towards me and helped. For that I am grateful!1Platinum Micro is a crookBe careful buying these from Amazon. Platinum Micro is selling faulty OEM drives. OEM drives come with no support from Western Digital and Platinum Micro offers no support either.I spoke with Western Digital and they determined I had a drive with a bed sector. Since the drive is a bulk OEM and not a retail drive there is no 5 year warranty with it. I got screwed hard. There's no mention in the description you're buying an OEM drive. Best to avoid and buy directly from Western Digital.1Noisy, but Otherwise Worth ItOthers have mentioned this drive being noisy, and they're not exaggerating. It's about as noisy as the old 10,000 RPM WD Raptors. I have a full tower case with 11 internal hard drives and 6 case fans, and this drive is louder than all other components put together, especially when it's reading or writing a lot of small chunks of data. On the plus side, it's fairly quick for a conventional hard drive, about 200 MB/s for both sequential reads and writes. Also, it's relatively inexpensive per terabyte.4Good Speed, Great Value.I have this hooked up to an external hard drive running on USB 3.1 using the latest chip from ASMedia 1351 in Windows 10. The drive is rated at a max speed of 200MB/s and I am getting Seq 195 MB/s Read and 196 MB/s Write. Overall I would have gone with the 6TB or 10TB Gold Drives which are rated at 220MB/s but did not need the extra space, however this double speeds from a few years ago for a pretty good price. Compared to a WD Black 4TB at Seq 171 MB/s Read and 169 MB/s Write this is a very good value for around the same price. I expect internal users will see a slight gain in performance and most pre-build portable external drives get about 60% of this speed so overall a good value.5Outstanding value and performance; steady transfer rate and very good I/O handling.I bought three of the 4TB WD Gold drives and the performance is outstanding. In addition to the speed, I needed the best reliability I can get for my money and this is the model to which I have committed my IT project's success. I have been a server engineer for many years and can say that these babies do not disappoint when it comes to performance. How did they arrive?I don't normally mention packing when talking about a product in the review but it has to be mentioned. These are sensitive devices. What's the point in buying a nice drive if it gets shipped in such a way that it becomes compromised? The packaging for these drives is top-notch. No nail-biting necessary when you order from Platinum Micro. These WD gold units are cushioned with end-brackets and each drive also arrives in it's own box. The drives are hermetically sealed and labelled individually--on the drive and on the Mylar vacuum bag. SMART Diags indicate that all drives are brand-new and the manufacturing date on the label verified it also. How am I using them?I use them in an AMD FX 8 core file and backup server running Windows 2012 R2. I need reliable storage that was based on the SATAIII interface for this particular build. I have a 1TB Samsung Pro SSD for the primary disk with these being used for network file storage and backups. Why did I go with these?*I compared datasheets, RAID configs, performance and reliability reports and online comparisons and then chatted with a WD engineer about my findings and concerns over reliability. I also chatted with storage support from Seagate and IBM.I was given this model number to look up online by WD and was told that it or the 6TB unit would not let me down. I spent weeks researching competitor's drives and their performance. I looked at many characteristics over the long run for various configs, setups and chipsets. I felt good about this decision after doing my homework. When I checked to see who sold them, Amazon had them in stock. So I bought 3 of them.Is the duty rate high? They are tested for 24x7x365 reliability at workloads up to 550TB per year. I tested two of these with very large data transfers, large photoshop saves and multiple simultaneous copy streams. They didn't skip a beat or lag and the copies didn't slow down over time. All the while, the network share to these drives remained available with instant response to other systems. So there is a steady transfer rate and very good I/O handling. As a side note, the trick to keeping server-class drives in optimum condition over the long haul is to keep them as cool as you can and at a consistent operating temperature.5Buy in-person if possible.I bought 2 of these drives. 1 from Amazon and 1 from a micro box store locally. Unfortunately the one from Amazon started having issues with bad sectors a few months in. No big deal, these are 5 year warranty drives. Except the one from Amazon came up as an OEM drive and WD didn't want to honor the warranty. Luckily Amazon took it back past the return period so not loss. I would recommend you buy these at a local retail establishment if possible. If not make sure you register the drive as soon as you get it. Your warranty status will show if the drive was actually a retail drive or an OEM or gray market drive.3Nothing good about thisI decided to migrate my 1TB data drive to this 4TB drive. I immediately started noticing problems. I'm a Systems Engineer for an MSP in my area and deal with all kinds of hardware and software.- Much slower read/write than advertised- It sounds like an aging hard drive that's about to fail-- Heavy clunking noises along with an uneven oscillating sound when it's workingI honestly don't trust it with my data. I'm in the process of migrating my data back to the 1TB drive while I look for a different solution. I've never heard a healthy drive sound like this. That's the most concerning thing. All of my mechanical drives (4 in total not counting this one) are WD drives and I've never had these issues.I can't recommend it.1
