Keeping It Simple For Aging MotherI recently ordered this for my 85 year old mother with dementia. Pros: I love the simple, big buttons, and also like the attachment point/wrist band which we may use to affix the control to a night stand (think bank pens) so it won't get lost. Cons: unless I misunderstood, it had to be programmed with another remote before use. It only took me about 5-10 minutes, but I was lucky I had a second remote to use. Also think the product could be improved by making the ON/ OFF button a different color like red as she has a hard time reading the labels.4TV is the most important item in my mom's dementia ...TV is the most important item in my mom's dementia life right now. This remote was a life saver. She has an LG TV and the remote worked right away. Did not have to program it. I have not received one phone call yet after she received this. I also purchased a remote locator and attached that to the back so when she loses it. I only have to have the staff at the senior center to push a button on the locator and wallah, it is found.5it's awesome once (Comcast) cable box users know the tricks to set-upSo, here's what I discovered during my learning curve for this great little remote:Comcast's (Xfinity) cable box controls the channel changing activities, so ONLY the search technic of programming this EasyMote was able to program those buttons. And the other buttons could only be programmed by holding the Xfinity's IR angled and actually TOUCHING the IR of the EasyMote.OK, so, here we go :Read the included instructions and re-read them until you almost know them by heart. Then watch the manufacturer's 2+ minute video many times to further grasp how the programming works. Then begin. Once I got this set up, it's awesome and Dementia-proof for my elderly friend who's now in a memory care facility.I discovered that I needed to use the search mode for programming the CH-up button and that then the CH-down button would be automatically programmed. Test and make sure those are saved. Then tackle the programming of the ON/OFF button and the VOL-up and VOL-down buttons via sync-ing with the current remote (that has WAY TOO MANY BUTTONS, right?! Or we wouldn't need to create a simpler remote for our seniors, eh?!) OK, once you've done all that and everything seems to be working, turn the TV off and back on and test and test and test. I discovered it took several tries to "lock in" those saved programming maneuvers. But once I finally did, it's awesome. Oh, for me anyway, I found that programming the MUTE button seemed to interfere with saved programming so I finally just didn't program that button. Which is fine, since the volume-down button works just fine. And also, my elder-friend can no longer mute her TV's volume and have its sound "disabled" until I can come and undo her muting of her TV. Very nice indeed. As other successful reviewers have said, patience is paramount. And worth it. This little device is a gem!!For added info, please refer to the manufacturers' website:https://easymote.us/program/Good luck!4Good Remote for People with Disabilities!!**UPDATE 2/21/2019** - We've now 'field tested' this remote with my relative who suffers from dementia and it WORKS LIKE A CHARM. He can easily use the remote, it pairs perfectly with his TV, and he is unable to accidentally reprogram the TV! As well, using the little wristband that attaches to the remote, I was able to wire (secure) the remote to his TV chair so it never goes missing. The best $15 I ever spent!Purchased this for a relative who unfortunately suffers from dementia & manages to accidentally *reprogram* every TV using the standard remote. This appears to be just what the doctor ordered. Took just a few minutes to program this remote to our TV & it has only 6 large easy-to-see (illuminated!) buttons. You can t accidentally hit souce or a dozen other confusing buttons. Haven t tested it yet with my relative yet but I see little room for error. Also, it has a convenient strap that I intended to use to secure the remote to the TV chair or a small table so the remote won t go missing...as many remotes have in the past. This remote seems like a good, affordable bet for those with disabilities.5Is great for dementia pal that needs simplified remote to prevent input/source or language changes. My friend has dementia and is in a memory facility. His disease has progressed to where he can no longer remember to use one remote to turn on/off the TV and another to change channels and adjust the volume. He would simply mash the keys on either remote trying to get something to work. I would visit and his TV (which he loves to watch) would be turned off because he couldn't figure it out and nobody on the staff had the tech savvy or took the time to fix it for him. This remote has saved the day... at least until he no longer understands how to use a remote at all. But even then, the worst that could happen is if he landed on an empty channel. The staff can easily fix that.My hint for Comcast cable users:The instructions with it have you put the remote into a "search" mode and then you click the channel up button until the TV changes channels. Every time you click the Ch-Up button it tries a different code. If you choose one and it doesn't work quite right, you can try again to continue to look for a code that works better. I kept going until I found the code that ran the simple, basic Comcast box... which also has a volume control. Then I used the Learning mode to teach the EasyMote the Power button for the TV. It took me several times before I figured out to alter the angle of the how TV remote (not cable box) was pointing towards the EasyMote while repeatedly pushing the on/off button until the EasyMote light blinked. It was like the ray shooting out of the TV remote didn't come straight out but angles down towards the floor. Now it works great. My friend is no longer stuck watching TV with endless Closed Captions or not being able to watch at all because his TV is waiting for input on HDMI2. Thus far he can adjust volume and change channels and turn his own TV on and off. And even if he gets more confused, the staff will be able to help him. I hid the original remotes just in case I need them but he is good to go.5Easy to Setup, has the essential features for seniorI brought this for our 90+ years old grandma because she has low vision problem. Couple with the remote, I brought a 40" Sharp TV for her. The sharp TV works well but the remote has a lot of small buttons that grandma can't see. The EasyMote is super easy to setup especially if you have a Sharp latest model TV because the default control code is for Sharp Q3000 TVs. As the result, EasyMote just works right out of the box. I also tried the remote on other TVs, they all work with quick setup mode and learning mode. The LED and button lights are quite bright so I actually disabled the button light. In conclusion, I would highly recommend EasyMote to anyone who really don't want to deal with all the buttons on a universal remote control if you just want to turn on and off a TV.5Awesome sauce! This remote is great! I bought it for my grandmother who tends to mix up her remote buttons. Several times we've had to set her tv back to English or reset her channels because she lost them lol. With this remote, she can watch tv late at night when she can't sleep and not have to worry about losing channels and such. Plus, the buttons are large and light up, making it much easier for her to see them.5Don t get frustrated if it doesn t work the first time.I don t often review products, but I felt that I had to in this case. Basically, I bought this for my Dad who is in his mid-80 s, has macular degeneration, and memory problems. He has an older flat screen TV and a Comcast DTA (nothing special). The newer Comcast remotes have many buttons, and he kept pressing the wrong ones. This usually meant that the audio and video would get messed up.This remote is basically bullet-proof with just the few buttons. It is easier for him to remember what button does what. Also, with this remote, pressing the wrong button or set of buttons will not crash the TV or cable box. That being said, it was not easy to set up the remote. At first, I tried using the learning method using the Comcast remote. I was not sure that the new remote would scan properly. After several tries, I found that the new remote was not accepting the signal from the old remote. I would hold the two remotes IR to IR, press the appropriate buttons, and sometimes one button would work, but the others would not. I would reset the new remote each time this would not work. So, I decided to try the scan method. I pressed the keys to set for scan, then pressed the CH+ button until a channel changed. Once that was done, I locked that in, and I would check the other buttons to see if they worked. I tried this method several times, the channels worked, but the volume did not. To try and fix this, I went back to the learning mode. I used the Comcast remote to train the Vol+ and Vol- buttons, as well as the Mute and Power buttons. If it did not work the first time, I would reset the remote, and start over.I probably spent about 45 minutes doing all of this from start to finish, but I was successful getting the thing to work. I probably would have saved time if I followed the instructions and used the scan method first before using the learning method. My point is this, I may have been frustrated for 45 minutes, but in the end, I got the thing to work. My Dad was appreciative that I got him something that he could finally use, and not mess up. Now he can use the TV on his own and I know that he won t get frustrated.5Perfect for the technologically challengedMy elderly mother and technology are not quite compatible. More than once I have had to rescue her when she would press the wrong button on her TV remote. She didn't need the myriad of confusing controls that are most remotes. Yet it needed to be programable to work with her TV, cable box, and sound bar. This simple remote did exactly what was needed. The power turns the TV off (the cable box & sound bar can stay on, no harm), the volume buttons & mute are set to the Sound bar, the channels to the cable box. She loves it, and I love not having to drive a couple hours just to reset her remote.4Got it set up quickly using old dish remote.I bought this because it said " UNIVERSAL LIBRARY Quick Search will scan for your TVs code, it s easy and takes a matter of seconds, also featuring a learning mode that allows you to program each button to a custom command." which I took to mean I didn't need the old remote, which I didn't have. Opened directions and the first line says you need the tv remote to program. Needless to say I was irked but I picked up the dish remote and was able to program the tv using the satellite dish remote, so all is well that ends well. Bought it for a 98 year old in a nursing home who can't see worth a darn and can only use one hand. He had a little difficulty figuring out how to hold it but I think he will get it and have much more success than the previous remote with WAY too many tiny buttons. So far so good. I liked the well lit green buttons and the size seems good too, not too big, not too small.4
