Almost Perfect USB Switch for the Mac MiniWith a growing number of workstations and servers, I found myself juggling up to 6 keyboards and mice. The hassle of cable management and the sheer amount of room needed for the peripherals became a major issue, so I began looking for a way to solve. In comes the compact USB switcher from UGREEN.The USB switcher "just works" and is plug-n-play. There's a single button on the top for switching up to 4x devices, and while there are a few cons (listed below), it's a pretty solid device and I'll be ordering another.Pros- Solid build quality- 2x USB cables included (for connecting to two computers)- One-click switching up to 4x devices from one computer to anotherCons- Micro USB can be used for power (optional), though a Micro USB cable wasn't included- Changing from one device to another isn't truly seamless (there's a noticeable 1-3s delay)- Even with Micro USB power, devices are powered down and then powered back on during switchoverIf you're looking for a portable, easy-to-use USB switcher, this is it. It works perfectly for keyboards, mice, and various other devices. I likely would not use it for external, non-powered disks though (due to the last bullet point on the cons).4Excellent USB 3.0 switch with small performance hitI use this USB 3.0 switch to share several devices between a windows desktop and a Surface Book 2 laptop. It makes it very easy to switch back and forth. This model provides power to the devices with a (not included) micro USB power supply, which keeps hard drives and other more sensitive electronics from losing power momentarily during a switch. It works well with a Samsung T5 1TB SSD, Drobo C USB 3.1 external hard drive, a SanDisk USB flash drive, and a Logitech mouse and keyboard. I am also accessing the switch through the Microsoft Surface Dock with no issues.I have attached an ATTO benchmark of Samsung T5 SSD transfer speeds when directly connected to a Surface Book 2, as well as through the UGREEN switch, and through the UGREEN switch without external power. These results show about a 35 MB/s drop in maximum sustained write speeds when going through the switch at the very high end of max USB 3.0 speeds. There is no difference when using the slower Drobo Hard Disk array, which averages around 190MB/s R/W both through the switch and directly connected to the PC. While slightly annoying to lose any performance like this, the convenience the switch provides mostly makes up for the slight performance drop. The only other things I wish this switch did was allow auto switching when one device is disconnected, or allow switch control from the connected PCs. It would also be nice if it included a USB power supply instead of having to provide my own.UPDATE 11/14/18: No problems with data corruption so far. The Drobo so far has no problems with being switched back and forth between computers several times a day4Works in most cases, but not for mineI bought this hoping to plug my keyboard, mouse, and numpad into it. All 3 of those have some pretty bright LEDs, but 2 of them are USB 2.0, and one is USB 3.0, so I bought the 3.0 version of this thinking it would be able to support the power draw. Unfortunately, my keyboard would not light up all the way with the recommend 5v power supply. When I gave it a stronger power supply, it would support all my peripherals, but it would make a very high pitch sound that was painful, unless I brought the brightness down to the levels that it supported with the weaker power supply.I also want to point out that I bought the Rosewill version of this, and it didn't even allow my keyboard to light up, even with the stronger power supply. If you're not using power hungry peripherals and still considering this, I would recommend this one over the Rosewill because: 1) more power support 2) Cheaper 3)much smaller footprint. The only reason to get the Rosewill one over this would be if you want to hide the actual USB switcher and just have a little button on your desk to switch back and forth between computers.3Works almost perfectly for my needsI set up a docking station for my work laptop at my home office desk where I also use my personal computer. I quickly realized that swapping USB adapters for mouse and keyboard every time I wanted to switch between work and personal computers was a hassle and unnecessary wear and tear on the ports. Once I also realized that the built-in DAC in my work laptop was garbage when I was trying to listen to some music on Pandora while I worked, I decided to look for a USB switch and came across this one.I am happy to report that the UGREEN USB 3.0 switch works almost perfectly with my setup. I have it connected to my personal computer and my laptop dock. Plugged into the front, I have my mouse adapter, wired keyboard, and a standalone DAC. I even used the 4th USB port for another keyboard adapter so that I can use my wireless keyboard from my couch when I want to switch the computer display over to my TV, and this works great as well.Pressing the button on top of the UGREEN unit quickly switches control from one computer to another with no delay. A small, non-intrusive blue LED indicates which computer is active. Mouse, keyboard, and the audio DAC all immediately work correctly on the selected computer. The only thing that I sometimes have issues with is if the computer I am switching to is asleep. In that case, moving the mouse or pushing a key on the keyboard does not wake up the computer like it normally would, and I have to press the power button on the computer to wake it up. I'm not sure why this happens but it seems like if the USB connection was not active when the computer was put to sleep, it does not make the connection until it is manually woken up. I have checked in my power settings to make sure that USB ports are not turned off when the computer is asleep, as this would be an obvious cause for the issue, but that is not the case. This is a minor inconvenience since my personal computer and dock power buttons are both easily accessible, but would be nice if it worked. The UGREEN unit is quite small and sits inconspicuously on my desk on top of my audio mixer. To keep the cables managed cleanly I do have to make a 180 degree bend with my two wired connections (keyboard and DAC) to route the cables back behind the switch. If I just had 4 USB adapters plugged in, that wouldn't be an issue. The only way to fix this would be to have all the ports on the back, and then the unit would have to be larger in size to accommodate 6 ports on one side instead of 4.The switch is very lightweight (which means stiff cords sometimes lift it so it doesn't sit flat) and has a cheap feeling plastic housing with no mounting provision if you wanted to attach it to something, but these are minor complaints as it works well enough. It appears you can power the switch with micro USB if your devices require a lot of power (if you were wanting to charge something via USB for example), but even with the backlit keyboard I am using, I do not have this switch connected to power, and it and my devices work just fine.Overall I am happy with the UGREEN USB 3.0 switch. If it were able to always make a connection with a computer that is asleep when switched to, I would be even happier, but that may not even be the fault of the switch. I definitely recommend this if you are looking to share inputs between two computers without having to plug and unplug cords, dongles and adapters.5Not enough USB controller ResourcesI got this to easily switch a web cam (Logitech Brio) and a headset (Steelseries Artic Pro) between two Windows based computers. One computer is a Dell for work which I routinely use for video conferencing. The other computer is a Velocity Micro gaming unit which I routinely use for recording / streaming games. On both computers I routinely get a "Not enough USB Controller Resources" message and it is frustrating. When that message pops up, I'll often lose either the mic, headset sound, or web cam. At least two out of three work. Sometimes they all work. Sometimes I'll have problems from the start. Sometimes I lose something when I open OBS. Sometimes things are fine until I launch a game. Sometimes everything works swimmingly.I've tried the hub in both USB2 and USB3 ports with no difference. When I plug the headset and webacm directly into a computer I have no issues. Some days I find myself spending an hour trying to get all these devices recognized before I'm able to play games. Often I give up and plug the devices in directly.2Works Great so farI received this device yesterday (August 1, 2019).I plugged my USB keyboard and mouse into it and connected my Windows 10 Laptop and my Windows 7 laptop. The Windows 10 worked fine the Windows 7 did not.The problem was (I figured out after contacting support) that I had plugged it into the docking station on the Windows 7 laptop which was USB 2.0.Once I plugged it into a USB 3.0 port on the laptop it installed and the mouse worked. The keyboard didn.tI had to update the driver on the USB keyboard to use a standard HID input driver then it worked.I don't like having to use the USB port on the laptop (not being able to undock as easily). However, the Windows 7 laptop is more of an archive right now. I don't take it with me and it will eventually be phased out.I can't fault the USB Switch box for my docking station not having a usb 3.0 Port.5Works...but not perfectIf you are looking for a USB 3.0 switch, then this is currently the most reliable one out there. However, this device is far from perfect, but if you know its quirks you can make it work nearly flawlessly. The problem with this device is that sometimes it will not detect devices upon switching if those devices currently are not in use. For instance, I move my mouse and press a button on my keyboard (both are plugged into the switch) every time I press the switch button. If you do this, it works 99% of the time. If you forget to move the mouse or touch the keyboard, sometimes it won't register and I have to press the switch button many more times until I get both of my devices working again. This can be problematic with USB drives too, I honestly just try to avoid using USB drives in it, but they do still work after a few re-insertions. I have the device mounted under my desk and out of the way for convenience reasons. So, this is a great cheap alternative to an expensive KVM switch, however, it does have its shortcomings. I am able to live with them, I do not mind having to move the mouse and press a keyboard button for switching. You should just be ok with that too if you choose to buy this product!4Useless for my Dell desktop and HP laptopI bought this device so that I could switch one keyboard and mouse between two computers (a Dell desktop and an HP laptop). It seems to work as long as both computers are "awake". But when one computer goes to sleep, that computer will no longer be able to detect the keyboard or mouse, even if I unplug and plug back in every cable, USB and power. This never happens when the keyboard and mouse are connected directly to the computer. The only solution I have found when this happens is to connect a different keyboard and mouse to that computer, or turn off BOTH computers, wait a couple of minutes, then turn on only the one that was having problems. Of course, I can't keep switching back and forth between my computers every 5 minutes to make sure they stay awake, so this device is useless to me. It seems like it should be such a simple thing, but apparently (from reading Amazon comments), none of these types of devices work properly for everyone. I'm guessing they all use the same flawed hardware on the inside or something. Too bad, it would have been nice not to have to have 2 keyboards and 2 mice.1USB drive speed when going through this switch is about 25% of nomralThe product works as advertised but I'm finding that the data throughput is about 25% of what I get when I connect the same usb 3.0 hard drive to my computer directly. I've changed out every cable except the one that came with the unit and the drives are all fine when I bypass the unit. So, it works... but there's no way it's running at USB 3.0 speeds. I haven't decided if I'm going to return it and try a different device yet but it's pretty useless at these speeds.2This allows me to easily switch my mechanical keyboard from one to the otherI have a work computer during the day and switch to my gaming computer at night. This allows me to easily switch my mechanical keyboard from one to the other.I actually started putting it on the floor and using it as a "foot button" with my toe, it works really well.5
