Customer Reviews

DOES NOT LEAVE OTHER GROUNDED PLUG AVAILABLEI bought this plug specifically because another reviewer said I would be able to use both plugs in the outlet. That is not the case if you want to use two grounded plugs. After I plug in this surge protector, only a two-prong plug will fit on the other side. My house was built in 1997 and I assume it has standard outlets. I can make do and don't intend to return the surge protector, but wanted other folks to know that you cannot plug in two grounded plugs when you use this device.3A little fiddly for the main AC outlet but good overall. The grey plug on the front of this takes a bit of wiggling to get my power cord in there. It's not bad, almost unnoticeable when you use an easily accessed plug, but it is inconvenient if you're stretching back behind furniture to plug this thing in.The total output of the USB ports are lower than I'd like, but if you're plugging in overnight at a hotel you'll never notice, and if you're using a low draw device with a high draw one it doesn't matter. My tablet and phone together are noticeably slower to charge, switch one of those out for something with a lower draw like my Kindle and this works just as fast as the official AC adapters. It packs up well, though the plug took a few wiggles to retract the first time, but once it was opened/closed a few times it loosened up and is easy to fold up to throw back in the bag. 4Excellent build quality. Compact and rugged. The beauty of this surge protector is its compactness. I can easily toss it into my laptop bag or overnight bag without it bulking things up, and the cable wrap keeps everything neat. I especially like that it plugs into the third AC jack in back during storage. The power cord is of decent gauge and appears to be solidly built. Time will tell, but this looks and feels great.Be aware that the total power output of the USB ports is a combined 1A. If you have two devices plugged in, each will only get 500mA. 500mA is plenty of power to charge an old-fashioned flip phone, or possibly perform a slow charge (6-10 hours until fully charged) on some low-power smartphones. However, it is NOT enough to charge a typical modern smartphone, let alone give you a quick top-off at the airport. This isn't a problem for us, as we have an Anker 5-Port USB Charger that we take when traveling. This plugs into one of the AC power outlets and gives plenty of juice to charge our two high-end smartphones, our two tablets, and a spare battery. Since we're only plugging in one charger instead of five, this leaves the other two outlets free for our two laptop chargers. That makes this surge protector the perfect size for us: exactly enough outlets, while being compact enough (and rugged enough) to survive frequent travel.4Nice space saving design, could use better placement of LED protection indicatorI am using this surge protector in an outlet behind a mounted TV. It takes up both the top and bottom outlets as it gets plugged into the top outlet and hangs down to cover the bottom outlet. Installation was easy. It just plugs right in. No need to remove the outlet cover screw. It feels securely attached. The surge protector can handle 3 plugs and a has an in/out for the cable wire. It has a nice slim design and fits nicely behind the TV. I like that the plugs go into the side of the surge protector promoting a space saving design. My only complaint is the LED that lets you know the surge protector is protecting your equipment is on the front and is impossible to see from any angle except straight on. This makes the protection status difficult to check if the surge protector is behind anything. Once installed behind my TV, I used a spoon to check for the reflection of the LED.4Well Designed Multi-Use Product! The Protect It! SK30USB combines form factor and functionality into one great product.Pros:- Thin form factor- Additional, surge protected, outlets- High powered (2.1A) protected USB portsCons:- The glowing green light may be a little annoying at night- The directions say to remove the outlet face plate if you're going to secure the device to your outlet. The device isn't quite large enough to cover the same area that face plates do, so it can look kind of ugly around the edges. I'd recommend leaving the face plate on, removing the screw, and using the screw on the device to secure them both to the outlet.Ideal for:- Bed side outlets, no unsightly individual chargers hanging from outlets. All you need is a USB cord!- Travel, no need to remember the charging bricks. Just bring the cables and you're good to go. As an added bonus everything plugged in is surge protected and insured by Tripp Lite for up to $5,000!5Perfect solution for a bedside table, desk, or end table near a couch where you sit with electronics I now own two of these, and they are exactly what I need. I use one at my bedside table to keep my phone upright, and charge overnight. I have multiple digital devices that I sometimes use at night (tablet for e-reader, phone, occasionally my laptop when I can't get an idea out of my head or am sick and in bed), and this serves them all. I have another near our sofa recliner, and my wife uses it to both charge her phone and plug in her laptop charger in the AC socket. It really minimizes the clutter of running multiple wires to a socket or socket splitter. The 4.8A output is great for putting a good solid charge on a USB-charged device. I recommend you purchase some good, solid USB charging cables with this, both to give yourself just the right length for your application to keep free of "wire clutter", and to make sure you have quality wire in the cable to carry the 2.4A of current to your device. My only complaint about the product is that I wish they made a QC 2.0 or QC 3.0 quick charge version, as more and more devices support it. I'd buy that version in a heartbeat. 5TRAVELER3USB: great surge protector, good USB charger, good price, very portableTripp Lite 3 Outlet Portable Surge Protector with 2 USB Charging Ports (2.1A total), 18 in. CordI bought this so my college student could protect their computer as they moved around campus, and charge their USB devices also. In use a couple months. I've used Tripplite surge protectors for years, and recently researched the latest UL 1449 edition 3 changes (ok, that edition came out in 2008; sorry for the delay). My general surge protector buying advice:1. Look carefully for a low number for Voltage Protection Rating (VPR, which is new terminology in the edition 3 spec). This is often called the let-thru or clamping voltage. Lower is better; less voltage from the surge reaching your equipment. 400 Volts VPR is the best i've seen. TRAVELER3USB has it. I don't know how critical it is to protect all three wires (Line to Neutral, Line to Ground, Neutral to Ground) but i'd rather have them all protected. TRAVELER3USB protects them all at 400 V.2. Get high enough Joules rating. Some surge protectors are only 200-780 Joules. I'd buy 500-1000 Joules if the price was low. I'm satisfied with 1050 Joules in the TRAVELER3USB.3. Don't buy something unless you check 1 and 2 above. No specs? Don't buy. Junk likes to hide specs. Sometimes you may have to check the manufacturer's site to find all the specs. Tip: it's a good sign, though not a quality guarantee, if the online description and/or back of the product (sometimes visible in online pictures) says Type 3 SPD (Surge Protective Device), Voltage Protection Rating X (L-N, L-G, N-G). Type 3, SPD and VPR are terminology new to edition 3 of UL 1449. 2nd edition and earlier were called Transient Voltage Surge Suppressors and they had a less rigorous test. You have to trust the manufacturer that they have a legitimate, not counterfeit, UL 1449 rating.4. Indicator light that protection is still working (the MOV's aren't burned out). The Tripplite TRAVELER3USB is good on all of the above. It also has protected equipment insurance and a limited lifetime warranty. If the "Protected" light ever goes out on the Tripplite, I plan to call for a warranty replacement (not 100% sure they'll replace it, but I thought I saw an Amazon review somewhere that said they did).If you are an Amazon Prime member, and don't need portability but would like more outlets, consider the APC P8U2, 8-Outlet Surge Protector 2630 Joules with USB Charger Ports. It has a better/higher Joule rating, but the VPR is not as good: L-N rating of 400V, L-G and N-G 500V.5Nice product with lots of power for the USB ports Very convenient and easy to install. Also makes a nice night light!I like the powerful USB ports. Combined, they produce 2 amps, which is a lot for USB. Most USB power supplies are lucky to produce half an amp per plug. I can easily charge two full sized iPads simultaneously with this, with power to spare.I had one of two give out after a year's use. (The green bar doesn't light, indicating the protection has failed.) However, Tripp Lite honored its warranty, so I'm happy. Things do wear out, but Tripp Lite had no qualms about sending me another free of charge. 5Tripp Lite 1 Outlet TRAVELCUBEI ordered three. All of the lights work. I wanted to be able to plug something else in above it, and I can. I even tried plugging 3 different 3-pronged, grounded plugs (A laptop, and two different microwaves) above it; it was a tight squeeze. I have to really push, to plug things into the Cube, and really pull to unplug things from it. I should have payed more attention to something. 4 of the outlets in my 1970's apartment have heat units directly below them. The Surge Protector extends below the faceplate about 3/4 inch when plugged into the bottom one. Those heat units prevent me from plugging the Surge Protector into the bottom one. I may not be able to use 1-2 of them for the original, intended purpose. I had considered buying one for my son in college anyways.4Not for bonded DSLA nearby lightning strike fried my DSL modem and the Ethernet port of a computer plugged into it. I tried putting this between the wall jack and modem but Speedtest showed I only got half the throughput as before, and the modem itself showed only 1 of the 2 upstream connections working. The real giveaway that this is not intended for bonded DSL is the 6' phone cord it comes with, only 2 of the conductors are present instead of the 4 in the cable that came with the modem.I will keep it to add a little protection to some stuff in the garage, just not the DSL modem I originally bought it for.3LOVE THIS LITTLE GUY!!!We have CONSTANT power bumps where I'm living in my Camp Trailer on the weekends and I was continually resetting everything I had plugged into one outlet in particular, i.e. coffee maker and cell phone chargers. NOW, if it's just a super fast bump my Surge Protector doesn't cut the power and I'm not worried about my EXPENSIVE Coffee maker getting FRIED!! Plus, this looks cool with the green light on top too!! YEAH, I'm a little nerdy about stuff like that!! It's so nice to have this in my camp trailer so I don't have to unplug anything to charge my cell phone in directly to this outlet - GREAT IDEA!!!5Surge went right through and blew out my furnace transformerTwo years ago we had a power surge in our home that blew out several appliances, so I purchased some surge protectors, including this one for our Bryant furnace. This week we had another surge and the surge went right through this device and blew out the transformer on my furnace. The device smells burned plastic but both lights are still on, which indicates it still works when clearly it shouldn t. This tells me the two indicator lights aren t in anyway related to if the device actually works.1A Must For Travelers I got this to charge my travel router, but it ended up getting used for so much more.I travel a lot for my work, and I am frequently in hotel rooms with only one or two accessible outlets. (The Ritz, these are not...) It used to be a real headache, choosing between the clock, lamp, laptop, phone charger or iPad. If you were charging a camera battery or something that blocks outlets, you were truly hosed.Along comes the Tripp Lite 3, and boom, problems solved. It takes the top plug and gives you 3 more outlets PLUS 2 USB charging ports. You can easily charge your phone and tablet plus have room for a laptop and anything else you need. You don't have to worry about blowing a fuse either, since this has one in it. (A little peace of mind when this turns into a power medusa next to your head.)My only downside that I can think of, is the plug itself is a fold out kind (the top two prongs fold down into the ground prong) which leaves me with some concerns about long term life expectancy. But I have been using this for a few years and there have been no such issues. 5A must have charger for road warriors! The Good:-Portable design-Can plug 3 devices and 2 USB outlets-Foldable plug-Easy to use-Has surge protection-Comes with caseThe Bad:-NoneThe Bottom Line:I travel a lot and this is my go to multi charger. I can charge my laptop, iPhone, iPad, hotspot and Jabra speakerphone. It has 3 AC plug ins and then 2 USB ports. The design is very portable with a fold in prong. It comes with a case for easy travel. Overall I would highly recommend if you re a road warrior.*If you found my review helpful, please let Amazon know by clicking the helpful button below!5
