    Great product, horrible - and environmentally unfriendly - pricingThe product is great. However, if you pay any attention (clearly something I didn't do before buying, oops), you'll notice that when you want to buy more bulbs after buying the starter kit, it's cheaper to buy another starter kit (and just throw away the hub) than it is to buy additional bulbs. Not sure what genius at Phillips came up with that pricing, but I'm not going to pay more than I need to for more, and I'm also not going to throw away perfectly good electronics because the company will sell multiple white bulbs at a decent price but not multiple color bulbs. Guess I'll look into a competitor. What a shame - I'd love to deck out my entire apartment with these, but I need 6 more to do that.1consumer antagonistic to make extra cash, cheaper systems are much friendlierUnlike competitors (which are half the price) the Hub can not operate over WiFi - it requires being hardwired onto a physical ethernet port.Also unlike competitors, the Power Supply / Wall Plug is not a modern 'slim' object that takes up the space of a single plug on a power strip, with the cord/strain-relief exiting to the side but instead one of the bulky old style "wall warts" that takes up 2-3 slots on a power strip and has the cord/strain-relief exiting to the bottom... like electronics from the 1980s.The UX and UI in the app to control the lights is bizarre and feels like engineers made it - not interface designers.The technology on these might be powerful, but they're a headache to install and extremely hard to use. Considering how much cheaper the competition is, it's sad when you realize Philips could have made a stellar product - but wanted to cut corners to get higher margins. A better power supply and onboard wifi would have cost under $3 more.1OK, I'm hooked!So I bought this starter kit to put my "toes in the water" of the smart lighting pool and I am now all in! I love adding playing with different colors to suit my mood and I'm totally hooked on controlling the lights with my voice (via Alexa). I am now adding more lights throughout the house but have to budget a little every month because the cost of these things can get out of control. I have tried the white ambiance as well but wouldn't recommend those unless you have a table lamp or floor lamp on a timer. Replacing that timer with a Hue bulb is a great option because there is just so much more flexibility.Set up was super easy for me. The app works great and I even use Siri to control my favorite scenes using HomeKit. I'm a huge fan!5Very reliable!I was originally planning on waiting until after we move to get into Philips Hue lighting, but the deal was too good to pass up. Overall it s very solid lighting, no connection issues so far, go to sleep/wake up feature is nice.I already had a bunch of LIFX bulbs, and comparing the two I noticed a handful of differences. The hue bulbs are much lighter and slightly smaller than the heavy lifx bulbs, the regular lifx bulbs are much brighter (lifx mini was only slightly brighter), the colors were similar except the reds and blues of the lifx being brighter and more intense, hue bulbs have a more stable connection (probably due to the bridge), the apps are both decent (lifx app is a little simpler, maybe because I ve been using it for a while). There are a lot more third party apps and features for philips hue.I combined 2 hue bulbs and 1 lifx mini bulb in 3 spot light lamps behind my tv (I bought a 3rd hue bulb and originally had it behind the tv with the other 2 hue bulbs, and decided to swap a lifx mini into the mix for better intensity of blues). I love the setup, it s much cheaper than the hue play lamps I was originally eyeing.I added some pictures of some different scenes, my light setup, and the difference between using the hue vs lifx on blues (it really doesn t show well on camera, but the blues on the hue bulbs are much lighter blue than the super intense blue of the lifx bulb.) Turquoise or aqua colors look better on the hue bulbs in my opinion, the purple is nice too.I have another spot light lamp in my bedroom, behind the tv next to a philips aura lamp (I was able to add the aura to the bridge and HomeKit, even though it said it wasn t compatible with philips hue, YAY!). I have the aura lamp set up to start the wake up feature a half hour before the hue bulb in the spot lamp. It s nice in the morning, and the tv blocks any glaring light. Works perfectly.Please excuse my mess of cables in the photos!4Skip the cheaper bulbs and splurge on these - worth every pennyThese light bulbs are life-changing. I was having a hard time waking up in the morning and my boyfriend introduced me to these bulbs and the sunrise feature. I loved them, but since they were pricey, I went for a cheaper version (Flux bulbs). Don't make that mistake! The Flux app has similar features but is clunky and not intuitive, the bulbs have connectivity issues and sometimes didn't work, and the bulbs weren't very "smart" - if I turned them off/on outside of their programmed times to turn off/on, they would do weird things and not work properly.For those reasons, the Hue bulbs are worth every penny. I have them set to turn on when I come home and turn off when I leave or at my bedtime - I don't even think about turning lights on/off anymore. They sunrise *every* morning without fail. If I wake up early and turn them on before the sunrise starts, they just skip the sunrise. (The flux bulbs wouldn't know what to do and would turn off, then back on, instead of skipping the sunrise.) And the scenes are really fun! I don't have great lighting in my apartment and it's never felt very home-y, but these bulbs give it some warm light and the ability to dim them to the level of light you need makes my place feel really cozy and inviting. I can't wait to buy more and I will definitely be giving these out as Christmas gifts - everyone needs them!54th gen. App doesn't include party mode (continuous transitions) Had to pay $5 for third party app.My main reason for buying this was to give a party atmosphere with colors continuously changing. It turns out the iphone app from Philips doesn't do those continuous transitions. There are an amazing number of features with this system, but none of which I particularly wanted.I spent about an hour setting up the system and getting acquainted with the ecosystem, and another half hour learning the $5 iConnectHue third party app just to get the continous transitions I wanted. Then it's still 20 seconds of fiddling with the iphone to change modes.On the bright side, I received the 4th generation bulbs with the white rings on the bottom. They do seem to have good color rendering; look almost as good as incandescent at lower kelvin.I decided to return these 2 bulbs and hub and get some standalone bulbs that cost much much much less and have their own simple remote. I think I'll hold off on adding more security vulnerabilities to my network until IoT has matured a bit more and economies of scale take hold.3LIFE CHANGINGThese are a Win! Win! I can't say enough about this product.1. I can set different colors in different rooms/lamps.2. I can sync it with my Google Home.3. I can download an app to control it from outside of my home/ kids forget to turn off the lights, Boom I turn them off from another state!4. I can set it up to know my routine, I walk in/out of the house the lights turn on/off or turn on/off with sunset / sunrise.5. I can have the lights wake me and/or slowly turn off at night to remind me it's bedtime.6. Instead of fighting with the kids, you tell them they have 20 minutes left to reading and set the light timer, the light slowly starts to dim.I love Philips Hue!! Seriously If I could work for them and tell everyone how much this product has changed my household I would do it for free!5Firmware updates brick these easily!This product walks a very thin line in its operation. One wrong move in updating software and you run the risk of not only the hub being bricked (rendered inoperable, cannot even factory reset) but also every bulb you have connected to it being bricked.This happened to me. Philips support is like filling out a tax form and then you ll have to do battle with support to convince them of your situation. And good luck with that.If I had it to do over I would have stayed away from this, but now I m hundreds of dollars in it.As always, Amazon came through in a pinch. They are amazing, but this product walks a very fragile line of operation.1Not worth the price!!!I have been wanting to get Hue lights for a while now and I figured this was the perfect opportunity since they were on sale. They are quite expensive and I could never justify spending that much on light but I am glad I did. They are great for my room and they even turn off when I need to go to sleep and turn on when I need to wake up. I enjoy them and will probably continue to buy more in the future.Update after only 2 months:After only have these bulbs for 2 months, one of them is not working anymore. Every time I screen it in it will blink non stop. I can no longer connect to it and my bridge doesn t even recognize it. This should not be happening to such an expensive product especially after barley even using it. If you are thinking about buying it, just don t. You may think it is convenient to have but in reality it is just a waste of money. I was super excited to get them at first but now I am regretting buying these!1PHILLIPS HUE DOES NOT WORK WITH ALEXAThe product specifically states works with Alexa it is a false statement and advertising. There are thousands of reviews claiming that it doesn t work with Alexa and it is a true statement. The lights works, but doesn t connect to Alexa. The Phillips Hue company is just trying to sell using Alexa as a backup sales. This is false and the company must pay for their false advertising. I am going to bring this case to an attorney as this is causing lots of headache and trouble. I like to give things that are real and it works as stated, not false advertised products.1
