    Great binoculars I've been looking at acquiring 10 by 42 binoculars for over a year.... and yes there are quite a few models to choose from.... with all kinds of price ranges.... I wanted to stay in the mid range around $300.... and find that these binoculars have exceeded my expectations.... the clarity in all kinds of light conditions is very nice.... focus is quick and field of view is pleasant..... I use these binoculars for mostly birding.... 5Don't Hesitate!! These binoculars are phenomenal!!! Bought these for a trip out west. Looked at another highly recommended pair, that were non ED glass. These were about $100 more. My husband really liked the fact they were Nikon and hopeful they will perform for him in low light situations and hunting. I'm sure they will after using them at dusk on our trip. They are very lightweight and have a rubber, non-slip feeling. They are easy to grab and use at a moments notice which is fantastic for my achy, arthritic hands. I wear progressive lense glasses and these binoculars are perfect with them. I have no issues, no uncomfortableness with my glasses pushing, nothing! The clarity with these binoculars is amazing!! Everytime I pick them up, I wish there was a button to click a picture of what I am seeing through them! I thought originally the other pair would suffice, but with the weight and grip and clarity, I couldn't be more happy!! P.S. I'm at hotel in South Dakota and as I was writing this review, my husband pointed out 2 whitetail bucks from our balcony, an 8 and 6 point...at 6:30pm on a fall night, these binoculars had no problem!!! Worth every penny!! 5Lens Cap Explanation (and overall review) I'm a product designer, and as such, I like to inspect the quality of the things I buy and figure out why certain choices were made. It is my opinion that the eyepiece lens caps were made slightly large on purpose, not by mistake. The injection molding on them are too clean for it to be a mistake, and they're obviously too large for them to be designed with a snug fit. If you look in the instruction book, some of the first pictures in it show you how to attach the (included) neck strap and how to properly connect the lens caps to the strap. When using the binoculars as they're intended, that is wearing them around the neck, the lens caps stay in place quite well. When it comes time to use them, though, the lens cap easily lift off of the eyepieces and hand from the strap out of place. When you let the binoculars hang from your next afterwards, the caps fall over the eyepieces and protect them. Since they face upwards, having them protected helps ward off rain, debris, or sunlight shining directly into the lenses. If they were any more snug, they would not work in this way. Yes, it would be nice if they were a bit more snug, as it would make it easier to use them without the neck strap, but that's the way it is. I also wonder how much they'd wear into the rubber eyepieces if they had a more snug fit. Sometime down the line I may design up and 3D print some more snug lens caps and will post the files online, so keep an eye out for those.Well enough about that, now on to the binoculars themselves. In a word, they're spectacular. I'm used to some of the older and larger Porro prism binoculars or the smaller, cheap roof prism type. But regardless of style, I've never looked through a nicer pair of optics.Before buying these, whenever I was out somewhere in nature, I'd always wished I had some nice binoculars with me, and since I have a big trip coming up, I thought I'd spend the money on a nice pair, and these blew me away. The very close minimum viewing distance is nice, as it makes looking at birds and squirrels a lot of fun. The long distance adjustment works very well, too. Looking past the optics, I wanted a pair that would be small enough to carry with me and won't be a burden (like while camping), but something large enough to provide good magnification. These are pretty much just the right size, as they're easily packable, but still large enough to feel good in the hand and have just enough weight to easily hold them steady. The rubber coating has a nice feel, and I think it should be able to protect them well. The objective lenses are set back enough that I don't have to worry about them taking damage if it bumps up against something flat. The objective lens covers are very nice and snap on tight. The tripod mount threading is nice, as securing it to something with legs really helps with stability.I am looking forward to using these more thoroughly on our trip and will try to post back about how well they work. 5Great Binoculars at a Very Reasonable Price I join the others who have rated the Monarch 5 with 5 stars. I have a pair of 10X40 Monarchs that are 12 to 15 years old. They're great binoculars, but I always felt the 10 power and their weight was making them a little difficult to hold a steady image. After reading many reviews, here and elsewhere, I opted for the newer Monarch 5 8X42's. The 5's are lighter, brighter and smaller than my older Nike binoculars. Edge to edge clarity, close focus and even depth of field is really amazing. The light weight and rubberized coating of the Monarchs make them extremely comfortable to use. The lens cap deal is really a non issue, they were designed that way as others have pointed out. I enthusiastically recommend them! 5Monarch 5 - 8 x 42's great for bird watching Bought these for bird & butterfly watching.1. Very lightweight - needed a pair of light bino's for my bad neck and when I walk long distances on trails in parks, refuges and wildlife areas.2. They are very clear and show good color of the birds and butterflies that I like to study and enjoy!3. Focus works well. It did take a day or two to get use to using the focus knob quickly on active feeding warblers but thats normal for any new binoculars.4. Eye relief is great! I wear glasses and I haven't had any strain on my eyes while using these on close or far away objects of interest!5. Close focus is not perfect for butterflies though! Several times already I have had to back up to focus clearly on butterflies and dragonflies that landed close to me.6. The lens covers don't really fit the bino's properly! Top ones are to large and fall off when walking! I corrected the problem by closing/bending the bino's a little inwards so now they stay on while walking through dusty or wet areas. It's been working pretty well so far.The bottom caps are a little too large.You have to push really hard to get them to snap in completely! It's a little annoying, but I'm adjusting to it like anything you buy new.7. The case is nice! I don't use the neck strap though as I had neck surgery a few years ago. I bought the ones that go around your shoulders and back. That way there is no weight put on my neck! Walking with these light bino's is a true pleasure! Lightweight is the way to go; especially if you walk long distances while using them or have neck or upper back problems.8. The price was great and you really get your money's worth! I have a friend who bought binoculars well over a thousand dollars that are heavy and as I can personally tell, are no better visually or for seeing precise colors than these Monarch 5 binoculars! I bought the 8 x 42's which are better for my eyes and the type of wildlife watching that I like to do!9. If you watch only things up-close like butterflies, moths, dragonflies or flowers, get a pair of bino's that have a 5 to 6 feet close focus distance. These Monarch 5 bino's have a 8.2 feet close focus and like I said before, I have to back-up a little at times to focus properly on insects that land very close to me! I have adjusted to backing up, but it would have been perfect, if they made these with a 5 foot close focus adjustment!10. I gave them a 4 out of 5 stars. Took one star off for the cap problems and the close focus distance. It's a personal thing for me about the 8.2 ft close focus distance. Caps are a minor, physical problem with the binocular accessories!Bino's themselves are worth every penny! 4Really nice day/night binoculars I'm not an expert on binoculars, so take this with a grain of salt, but I'm really pleased with the quality and ergonomics of these.It took me some time fiddling with the width of the binoculars and the distance from eyes or glasses (I tried it both ways), but I was able to get very finely detailed images through these -- I was able to eliminate the partial circles that I saw with cheap binoculars.I also tried these at night, in the city, and could see things (objects against a dark background, etc.) that I couldn't make out with my naked out. If you want a really good night vision binocular you'll need to buy something with a bigger objective lens, but these are still nice. 5Great binoculars. We bought these for a wildlife expedition to Alaska, and they were wonderful. Powerful enough to provide clear views of distant bears, whales and birds, but a wide enough angle of view to make spotting easy. Good light gathering allows for viewing in dim light. Used in light rain with no problem. Medium size is perfect -- not too heavy and easy to pack. These are the most expensive binoculars I've ever bought, but they are by far the best. Great value. 5Very Satisfied I have had these for 18 months, and I am very satisfied. I still remember the first bird-watching walk I took with these, and WOW--compared to my previous cheap pair, it was like a new world. Solid quality, good value. Also, once recently on a camping trip I left them outside overnight by accident, and in the morning they were covered with dew and the lenses were fogged--but they cleared up very quickly, with no damage at all. The only negative I can think of: the case is a bit cheap/flimsy. 5Great, except or annoying squeak These are good quality glasses. They focus up close and the eye cup adjustments work well. I would have given them 5 stars except that they have an annoying squeak in the focus knob. It's very distracting to other birders in my group, because it sounds like a "chirp." Others have complanied in online forums, and the conventional wisdom is that you need to work the focus knob back and forth until the squeak disappears. Lubricating it isn't recommended. I've done a lot of back and forth, but the squeak is still there. I'll keep trying. 4a clear and bright view I looked at other binoculars in this price range, including the Vortex Diamondback. When I brought these up to my eyes, they were just noticeably clearer and brighter. My old bino's were the compact variety and I'd been wanting a good pair for years. I use them for birding and I'm thrilled with them. It feels almost "magical" to see those beautiful little creatures so clearly and with such detail. I think the ED glass really does brighten things up.Some people complain about the loose cap for the eyepiece end. It works exactly as it should. It drops off easily when you raise the binoculars up to look through them, and it sort of falls back into place when you lower them, so that dirt doesn't fall into them when you are walking through brush, etc. I wouldn't want to bother with removing tight fitting caps every time I looked at something.The adjustable eye relief is really helpful. It has steps so you can easily set both eyes the same. They are comfortable to hold. I plan to get a harness because I find it uncomfortable to have anything hanging around my neck, but the strap that comes with them is a really nice one.In my opinion, the only thing that could make these better is if the field of view were slightly greater. Some in this price range do have a little wider field of view, but good optics seems to be the most important feature to me. 5
