Heads up to Drobo owners.... This converter EXACTLY matches the dimensions of my Drobo 5N drive bays so it can be a little bit difficult to insert. But, once aligned and inserted, it looks like it was molded in place.One word of warning, the 2B revision of this converter has vertical cooling vents above and around the SATA connector. The Drobo 5N has a wire spring near it's SATA connector to help eject the drives. This spring will catch on the converter cooling slots and you'll find the converted will stop short of insertion by about an inch. It took me awhile to figure this out because you can't see any interference problems when you take the converter back out!A strip of black electrical tape over the converter slots solved the problem for me. I took off one star for this issue because i was a few minutes away from returning the converter. Otherwise, I like the quality and toolless design. 4Limited by sheet metal fabrication process Due to a potential shipping delay, I ordered the similarly-purposed plastic version (Icy Dock MB882SP-1S-2B) of this item at the same time. In the end, both arrived the same day so I had an opportunity to compare closely and select which one to use for my SSD installation task.I opted for this metal version, and it does work (after one try when the SSD wasn't recognized by the system, remedied by pulling the caddy back out, fussing over the adapter without really changing anything, then re-installing). However, it did leave me with some concerns, as follows.- the holes for the four mounting screws were correctly positioned but required more than the expected amount of force to drive in the screws. It was as if the holes were not pre-threaded. Tightening these screws into a real 3.5 drive feels like a precision operation. Tightening them into this adapter made me hope I wasn't cross-threading the screws.- there is a clever mechanical linkage that automatically slides your SSD into the connector fitting as you close the hinged lid of the adapter. Unfortunately, since the lid hides the evidence, you don't really know how well the SSD connector has been mated into the adapter's connector. All the way? Or perhaps a millimeter shy? We are depending on the precision of the sheet metal parts for a tight (but non-damaging) fit.- there are air vents, but not particularly extensive. My SSD temperature is running about 85F (in 70F ambient) - this may be normal (I don't know what a "normal" SSD temp is).In comparison, Icy Dock's plastic version of this article doesn't look so bad. The plastic injection molding is probably more precise than the other's sheet metal work. It has nice looking brass threaded inserts for the mounting screws. You snap your SSD in yourself, then slide on the plastic lid, so the critical installation step is in sight. Next time, I would probably go with the plastic version. 3Update now works completely. --Works without top cover, did not work with top cover installed.-- Update: I removed the hard-drive and put it in according to the video a reader pointed out to me,and it now works with the top cover. I had been putting it together incorrectly. But the video was key to my understanding of the issue. I recommend the instructions also include a link to the video, and expanded instructions on the leaflet. end update.It was very easy to put in my pc and use although there was one problem:I put my ssd in the adapter case then installed it in my pc, closed the pc case and started my pc 5 times and it was not recognizing the hard drive even though the hard drive led was lite showing it was getting power. I opened my pc and checked and rechecked the sata and power cables, and finally put the adapter in my pc without the adapter top cover and it booted instantly. My conclusion is that the adapter top cover was in some way causing the sata connection to be broken. The product came with a small one page picture instruction, and I followed the instructions as best I could from the pictures. However, I must not have been putting the cover on correctly. Leaving the top cover off most likely will not work for a regular hard drive, but my ssd has no moving parts and no vibration to break the connection, and is currently working great. Although my pc has other parts that do vibrate and that could be a problem later on? But as it was a good price and works for what I wanted I am somewhat satisfied. I spent about one hour on what should have taken 15 min. so I left well enough alone, but may try to trouble shoot the problem later or at least drill one hole in the side to screw the ssd down tight. 5It works fine but there are some issues I've built dozens of systems and through the decades I've found that all plastic shells are prone to fail. Something always goes wrong, whether it be mounting points, internal connectors, or the casings... something always fails. With that said, I took a leap of faith and bought one of these to test in a new i7 system with a 2.5" Mushkin SSD. As expected the case door mechanism feels cheap and slides closed with a "click" (like the battery door on a remote) so this will become useless if opened and closed too many times.Functionality: The thing works great. I built the system with the SSD free hanging in the case until I decided on the Icy Dock solution. I'm happy that there were no surprises, and it worked right out of the shipper. The one thing I didn't like was the profile is too large to actually fit in the 3.5" slides. I had to mount it vertically in the free space for CD/DVD ROM drives. 4Overall good but spring pressing on top of drive is worrisome This was an easy way to mount a 2.5" drive in a 3.5" tray without having to fuss over airflow concerns (the little drive not providing enough resistance and worrying that it would affect airflow across the hotter-running 3.5" drives). It still lets a little too much air pass versus a 3.5" drive in the same tray, but it's not as bad as if I had left the tray with only a bare 2.5" drive in it.It lost a star because of a concern I have with the metal spring that supposedly holds the drive down. I put a drive in one to test for fit and took it right back out. In only a minute or so, the label on the drive had been dented in exactly the spots where the spring rested against the drive top. This concerns me for the long-term metal fatigue that might occur because of having something constantly pressing down so hard on the top of the drive, and not even bothering to distribute the load -- merely pressing on two points. A plastic or metal device to spread the load would have helped considerably here, I think.Thankfully I will be using them 'flat' so I don't need this spring to hold my drives in place (the plastic lever that keeps them against the interface connector does not require either this spring or the rod on which the spring pivots), so I removed the offending spring. Now these hold my drives firmly in place against the internal connector (with gravity holding them down flat -- I would have used something else, that would not have added point loads to the top of the drive, to hold them down if I were using these on side, though), and I have an easy way to deal with having the drives involved in an existing hotswap backplane with numerous 3.5" drives. 4Ideal for Hot-Swap Bays My chassis is a NORCO 4U Rack Mount 10-Bays SATA/SAS Server Chassis RPC-450TH, which like many enclosures, has a number of trays, each of which will hold a "standard" 3.5 inch form factor drive. The trays then slide into the chassis with the drive inside them, and the drive's connectors mate perfectly with the backplane upon insertion -- if the connectors are where they should be for a 3.5 inch drive.However, most of the "adapter" and "conversion" kits I encountered when shopping seem to be intended for mounting with screws or rails in a PC's main drive cage. This one would work for that too, I'm sure, but those others would definitely not work in hot-swap trays.The reason this one works so beautifully is that the exterior of this product is actually a faithful reproduction of a 3.5 inch drive, with screw holes and cable connections in precisely the same places that an actual drive would have them. For all practical purposes, this is indeed a 3.5 inch drive, except that it has your 2.5 inch drive connected on the inside doing the actual job.Bottom line: If you need a way to put a 2.5 inch drive into a 3.5 inch hot-swap tray, like I needed in order to insert use an SSD boot disk in my chassis, this is the one. Get it.(Or get the metal version, if that's your taste, since I imagine it's functionally identical; I see no need, though, since this one is plenty sturdy enough for every use I can think of.) 5Does Not Work with SAS Drives This product does not work with SAS drives. We placed our SAS drives in the converter case as directed then placed in a USB 3.0 Dock and computer would not recognize drive. Removed SAS drive from that dock and tried it in another dock and computer would still not recognize SAS drive. Then tried a different SAS drive in the converter and still computer would not recognize the drive. Then removed that SAS drive and installed a SATA Samsung SSD 860 EVO drive in the converter case and plugged it in the dock and computer immediately recognized the drive. So, SAS drives DO NOT work in this converter even though they advertise that it does. Converter works well for 2.5" SSD drives ONLY. 1I am glad I did This review is for ICY DOCK EZConvert 2.5" to 3.5" SAS / SATA HDD & SSD Converter / Mount / Kit / Adapter (MB882SP-1S-2B).I have several 2.5 inch hard drives that were salvaged from old hardware and were sitting idle.I decided to re-purpose them in a server case to setup a network storage box. That case only took 3.5 inch drives, so I needed a converter.I researched different products and eventually decided on this specific model. I am glad I did!This converter is well built, reasonably priced and checks all the right boxes based on my needs.Pros:1. It has SATA connectors at the exact points a real 3.5 HDD would have2. Fits in hot swap bays, tray-less mobile racks and all other drive bays meant for 3.5 inch drives3. It has screw mounts at exact spots as a real 3.5 HDD would have4. The 2.5 inch drive fits securely inside this converterCons:1. Drive insert is a bit awkward process as opening the enclosure is not that smooth. It is tool-less but not a breeze.All in all, it is a great product which gets the job done. 5Tool less and Snaps in PC Fixed Drive Bays[No Cables Used] Perfectly I was having a lot of trouble picking a 2 1/2 inch to 3 1/2 inch Drive converter. Mainly because no review ever in plain language said that the Converter would work in my application. Many reviews saying that they fit in Mac but I'm in the PC World.I have a Corsair Cube Case. At the bottom of the case are two immovable 3 1/2" drive bays with the connectors built into the case at the end of the drive bay. 3 1/2 inch drives snap in. Absolutely no cables are used. This converter slid in and snapped in perfectly.This means that the connectors are located absolutely identical in form factor to a standard 3.5" Hard Drive as far as I could see not even off by a mm.Another nice features.This Drive Bay is tool less. I'm Mr 2 thumbs and I had no problem fitting my Samsung 2.5" Evo Drive in it and the way it's done should work for any 2.5" drive.This was a flawless easy install!Note: The soldering looked ugly, but since it worked I won't take a star offYou can buy this product with confidence that it will allow your 2/5" Drive to go anywhere a standard 3.5" drive will go 5Cold shoulder at first but it works In older Apple systems how do you get a new SSD drive in to the SATA slot? One solution is available from Icy Dock.While I like bright and shiny as much as the next person, my current computer is just fine if I could improve disk access. So the decision was made upgrade my primary drive from SATA to SSD. The SSD review will be posted soon. This is how I got the SSD into my system.The enclosure is billed as a "no-tools" required enclosure which it is. Fitting the drive in such a small space can be tricky and a little patience is needed to get a good fit.Tools are needed though to attach the Icy Dock to the system sleds that hold the drives in my system. Nothing big, just noting installation will require at least a screw driver.Once in, I found an issue with the drive. While the system could see the drive in Disk Utilities, I could not format it. Obviously there was an issue but I do not think it was with the Icy Dock. After an hour had passed the drive worked. As this is not the review for the SSD, I won't go into any more of those details.Getting back to the enclosure, it did what it said it was going to do, it did it easily and it was very cost effective. Now if you are going to be changing drives in and out a lot, then maybe something not made of plastic would suit you better. For most of us, who install a drive and then think nothing more until the next time we need to upgrade, this is a good solution at a good price and ease of installation.R. Kyle, April 2014 5
