Easy to install and sounds decent I use my laptop in a port replicator and there was a humming noise from my amplifier whenever the power supply was connected. I read that one solution was to use an external audio card. I went for the Creative, because I have been familiar with the company ever since their original 14 inch ISA original Sound Blaster card. This installed without any issues, and I found that Microsoft's driver database includes all the features included with the CD-ROM. The sound from this is not phenomenal, but it does up to 24 bit 48khz sampling. It drives my Audio Technica m50 headphones just fine while on the go. Physically, the drive is slightly wider than a SanDisk Cruzer, and has a tethered cap preventing it from being lost. The included short USB extension helps by preventing the wide XfiGo from blocking adjacent ports on my laptop. Connecting this between my laptop's port replicator and my stereo solved the ground-loop hum and does it's job well as a sound card. One nice feature is the THX studio pro crystallizer. It "fills in" missing pieces of information of compressed audio to simulate higher quality sound. I usually keep this on 50-70 to avoid the audio from being too dull or too bright. Crystallizer works better than the "retriever" function built in to my Piioneer receiver, which only dynamically adjusts the equalization causing everything to sound a bit too bright when turned on. 5Clear Sound Without Laptop Fan or CD Noise Been buying these things since 2012. I use these to listen to music or WebEx calls without noise from the laptop headphone out ports which, depending on the model, can be quite loud and annoying! Electronics blogger NwAvGuy did an incredibly in-depth analysis of this device on his blog, if you're into that sort of thing. Hard to beat this price to performance value. 5Including the needed software would definitely be an improvement... I can't recommend a product in which the packaged instructions direct me to download a software suite that happens to be incompatible with the product itself. I was aware it does not come with an installation CD when I purchased the item so I probably should've seen this coming. The sad part is that I've purchased the exact same item a year before. That version came with a CD which included the base software needed to get the included features running (Crystalizer, THX, Creative Entertainment Console, etc.). I believe that version utilized TruStudio Pro. Everything worked flawlessly until the device finally died about a week ago.Now here I am with a brand new Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Go Pro. Same model number as the old one, though: 1290. This version seems to use SBX Pro Studio instead to facilitate the audio enhancements. ...And it happens to not have SBX Pro Studio included in any way, shape, or form for whatever reason. ...Or any software, for that matter. And, as I've mentioned, the instruction booklet redirects me to Creative's Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Go! Pro support page. After attempting to install the drivers from there... Bam. "Setup is unable to detect a supported device on your system". Cue four hours trying to troubleshoot my way out of this problem, to no avail. Now don't get me wrong. It does work...in the sense that sound comes out when I connect my headphones and start playing music. Which is why this isn't a 1-star review. But seeing as without the software, the sound quality doesn't change at all, I'm basically rocking an inch-long extension for my headphone cables. Not something that I'd recommend paying 29.99 USD for. 2Terrifiic Product, True Owner, No Marketing Ploy! How do I put how satisfied I am with this product into words? I really can't. This little stick is just THAT good. Let me go into detail all the little ways this device has impressed me. I like to watch rock videos and watch drum videos from time to time on Youtube, which isn't very known for audiophile sound. Now, I had bought some $200 pair of headphones and tired all sorts of software options prior to obtaining this product. Let me tell those interested in the product, the sound quality BLEW ME AWAY! Sounds I never thought I could hear were in PERFECT clarity and enhanced to the point that I was shocked. Highs were more crisp, low sounds suddenly came better into focus, and I just for hours surfed the web for videos to test this product out. Impressed me every time. The interface is simple and easy to use. The product offers different features such as putting a sound source into places like a concert hall or amphitheater. The product also includes a graphical EQ that can be enhanced to change the sound makeup. Trust me, compared to what I have used before, you would only need to adjust a small bit as this product is super sensitive to adjustments. The product also contains features like bass and treble enhancers that really bring out the clarity of audio like never before. Simply put, this thing makes a pair of $30 value speakers into something more expensive sounding. :Let me put this into perspective, you will want to keep the volume low, its enhanced to the point that one would actually distort sound if they cranked the volume up.Being a gamer, I would HIGHLY recommend this product to anyone who wants a solution to gaming as this is a 7.1 surround sound product that delivers. I watched several Let's Play videos of several games where the sound could be pinpointed. I even closed my eyes to see if I can find where things were by sound. My test was passed with flying colors. For around 40 bucks, you can't go wrong with this. I am surprised that I got this kind of quality in this price range. High recommendations from my end. 5Creative needs a upgrade if they want to compete in the portable USB DAC market I own a lot of Creative products and most of them are wonderful consumer audio devices ranging from sound cards, speakers and headphones. However the X-Fi Go! is a disappointment. It lacks some of the essential features that Asus Xonar U3 have. The Asus U3 offers a pretty good portable DAC headphone amplifier with changeable gain control that ranges from 32ohm to 150ohm while the X-Fi Go! only have one default setting. This causes low impedance IEMs and headphones to have a very noticeable hiss at lower volume. Like many other reviewers here, the background hiss caused by either bad grounding, shielding or too high of a gain deteriorate the overall sound quality. The DAC itself is on-par with the Asus U3 and beats any onboard audio, but since most people will be using this device on a laptop, the mediocre experience when using with headphones and IEMs makes it a hard choice over the Asus U3. On the plus side, the X-Fi have a better gaming audio IF the developer uses it.If you want a sub $50 USB DAC, the Asus U3 will be a much better option. 3Good Product, installed fairly easily in Win 7 Home Premium. My Lenovo laptop with Win 7 Home premium was working just fine and I was able to capture streaming audio of my on-line lectures. Installing windows updates crippled the sound card. So I was not able to record streaming audio any more. The Internet forums are full with this discussion. This is an intentional activity according to the forums in the name of Digital rights Management (DRM) - destroying people's machines!.I bought this sound card and installed it using the supplied installation disc. It installed slowly but did work. The only issue is that I do not hear the sounds from the laptop internal speakers and must use a head phone or a set of external speakers. Minor inconvenience but it does what it was bought for. Good sound quality and many sound effects are available (which I don't use).It seems that windows updates are deliberately crippling functionality in the operating system which it was sold with. This has happened to several computers running Windows XP after certain updates were installed. This little device may be a work around, although little inconvenient. The price is right through.I hope this helps. 5Loving it and great price! I recently broke the onboard sound on my Sony laptop and, since i use it quite a bit these days, i need access to my music and movies stored on their.I have always gone to creative for my audio needs, so i bought this little sound card and i am glad i did. This is a fine soundcard, the sound enhancement and reproduction are balanced at all ends and the THXtruStudio is indeed a fine piece of software to use.It even has the lid attached to the body, its these little things that make a big difference.Installation was a breeze, all the software is stored on the 1GB internal storage and takes little time and effort to install. While i have not a single problem with the capabilities of this device, i do wish it was smaller. I tend to knock it about the place when i move my laptop around.Otherwise, if you truly over your music and care about how it sound then this is the best thing you can do for your laptop.time of used 1 months 5Simple, effective way to improve sound on any PC. Very effective at improving the audio output of my desktop and my laptop as well. I love that it is portable and the drivers/software can be installed over the Internet, making it usable on almost any machine. It is a great add-on but please keep in mind this is not designed to replace a $100 PCI sound card. The sound quality and volume is significantly improved over the motherboard built-in audio. I have been testing with my SONY MDR-V6 Studio headphones and the clarity, bass depth, channel separation, and crispness is all very much improved. It also acts as a decent headphone amplifier. When I was using these headphones through the built-in audio, I was running system volume around 80% and now have reduced that to about 50% with the same output. It may only be USB powered but it sure drives some more juice, which is great. For gaming, the software package was very easy to install and get the Alchemy program setup for my few games. The entertainment console is simple and makes it easy to tune the sound to your taste or application. This little usb sound card is a hit. For the price, ease of use, and significant sound enhancement, there really is nothing else like it. 5Output audio has distinct crackling noise I was hoping this would be an improvement to my laptop's onboard audio while eliminating white noise from my microphone. I will say that I am happy with the input audio quality - my mic sounds good and it comes with a number of fun FX and voice distortion effects.HOWEVER, the output audio is completely ruined by a very noticeable crackling noise that's hard to describe, like someone crinkling tissue paper half a second delayed over the audio. I have gone to lengths in attempts to remedy this, trying multiple computers, and contacting Creative support directly. No dice.Don't buy this product. Either save ~$35 and buy a simple audio adapter, or go all in for a proper DAC/AMP/compressor. 1Works with the Nintendo Switch I've had this kicking around in a box since I bought it back in 2013. I originally bought it for use with a QNAP NAS - it was plugged into the NAS, and then into some speakers in my man cave, for listening to music (via a webpage running on the NAS as a service), without having to have an extra piece of hardware. And for that purpose, it worked fantastic.Fast forward to 2018 and this has been in a box for the past 3 years or so (the NAS is still in use, but I don't listen to music very often these days). And I'm in need of an alternate audio output for my Nintendo Switch while docked. My Switch is on firmware 6.1.0, and the headphone jack on the Switch works just fine, even while docked. But I remembered I had this, so I dragged it out and plugged it into one of the USB ports on the dock, and lo and behold, it works! While plugged in, the volume buttons on top of the Switch control the output volume. I haven't tried the mic input yet, but it worked with both headphones and into an amp (though the little headphone/speaker slide switch on the side appears to have no effect). My Verdict: This is a good solid audio output option for use with the Switch. 5
