Solid, good-quality beginner scope. This isn't going to give you Hubble- or Voyager-quality photographs, nor let you see a Jupiter the size of a tennis ball. What it *will* do is give you a spectacularly good view of the moon, let you see Mars well enough to distinguish some color, make the Galilean moons appear like magic, and show Saturn's rings clearly defined. If you have a pretty good grasp of the sky and what's out there, you can pick out a lot of things worth viewing through the scope, and it's easily powerful enough to let a young astronomer-to-be watch Jupiter's moons and Saturn's rings change position and orientation over time. A moon filter is a good adjunct to the scope, especially if you get a more-powerful eyepiece, but other filters are honestly of questionable use. We tried hard to get a good look at Mars when it was close earlier this year (2018), but were never able to resolve it well enough to see anything distinctly. Nevertheless, we're happy with the telescope and trot it out regularly to see what we can see. If nothing else, seeing some of the outer planets through this scope has whetted my daughter's appetite for stargazing, and we're probably going to have to get her a better telescope soon. :) 5Great telescope, especially for beginners This is such a great telescope! It was really easy to set-up (and I am a complete novice at these things). We tested it out first on trees and signs in our neighborhood and the clarity is truly amazing! That night there happened to be a full moon and it was absolutely spectacular! I put my phone to the viewfinder and took a few snapshots. You can see all the details of the craters, so stunning! The telescope is bigger than what I expected, so it does take up a lot of room in the house and you can't really store it once you have the alignments in place, but since it looks really nice it fits in with the d cor. 5Worth it I just used this for the first time last night and was very impressed. I live in a medium sized city, light pollution is definitely a thing here. Even with that though I was able to see Jupiter and it's 4 moons!! I pointed the telescope at the brightest star I could see and it happened to be Jupiter. I could even faintly make out the red stripes on the planet! I used the 20mm lens that comes with it. I will be getting the 2x barlow lens that I see other people talking about to enlarge the view. I also was able to see a star, not sure which one, but I could see it moving, as in the gases around/ coming out of the star. It was pretty spectacular. I will say you must have patience and be able to stand very still.Set up was very easy and didn't take long. I have never used a telescope before, I think I just found a new hobby for myself. 5Awesome telescope for hobbyist Most folks like reflectors but all of that collimating just turns me off. My AstroMaster is always ready to go in a minute's notice and where I live (southern Louisiana) that's important. Our weather is cloudy for a large portion of the year so when the sky does clear I don't have time to play around with aligning mirrors. This scope is plenty powerful enough to check out the moon in great detail, Jupiter (you can see the cloud bands) and Saturn (rings are visible). It is also fine for the larger and brighter Messier objects like M31 (Andromeda Galaxy) and M42 (Orion Nebula). I do suggest eventually getting the Celestron lens addon kit for it though as that opens up so many more options and the lenses are just a better quality.Lastly I will comment on the tripod. I am giving this scope a 5 star rating DESPITE the tripod. It's not that it's flimsy, it's fairly sturdy, but the clutch system makes it really hard to get it set onto a moving object and then to re-position when it moves. Honestly, I usually just mount this scope on top of one of my sturdy video tripods and it works even better. There are threads on the bottom of the scope's dovetail mount that allow you to mount it to a standard tripod and that wins lots of brownie points with me. 5The sky isnt what we think it is. Excellent starter scope for anyone interested in viewing the moon and celestial bodies. Very sturdy and well made for being one of the lower models. I would highly recommend barlow scopes 2x and up for deeper viewing. Hint for clear viewing, try and keep the eye lenses high in the scope so the image could clear out, basically like manual zoom. Get moon filters and play around getting other lenses, doesnt matter brand just 1.25" for the sizes, overall very happy with my purchase, me and my son love it. 5Great for looking at the moon, Jupiter, Saturn This is technically my 2nd telescope, but the first one was when I was a kid on extremely low quality. The price on this is very affordable, and so far I've seen the moon, saturn, jupiter, and mars. I could faintly see Saturns rings, and a few of Jupiters moons. That's pretty amazing given the scopes low price. The craters on the moon are pretty amazing looking. If you want a cheap scope that sets up in seconds, this is a great option. If it turns out you get bored of it, then the low price wont kill your bank account. I plan to keep mine and enjoy it now and again when something is worth looking at in the sky. 5Love it For what I spent I got my money's worth. I can see the Orion Nebula, Jupiter and it's four moons and much more. I don't have it yet but I'd recommend you get the AstroMaster Accessory Kit. The telescope itself feels very well built. The tripod is a little iffy at times but it works well. The red-dot StarPointer is not the best and if you try your best to align it it will work alright but it's not the best so don't expect much from it. As a beginner scope or just someone who wants something to have a casual look into the night sky every now and then it will not disappoint ! 5A great first telescope! I love mine! I really enjoy this telescope. It was my very first telescope and I picked it up on Amazon one Christmas when it was on sale. I know very little about telescopes, but I have been able to find stars and of course the moon with this telescope and I have even managed to take photos using my iPhone 5 with the telescope. It takes patience, and a little bit of luck in snapping the photo, but I have captured some images that have provided a lot of enjoyment. Here are a few of the moon that I snapped last night, on July 12, 2016. 5Fun toy to play around with. For an introductory scope to learn about astronomy on a budget, hard to beat. Easy to assemble...easy to use! But, at the end of the day, the lenses included are the cheapest money can buy. And it shows. To improve your viewing experience - open your wallet and buy some new eye-pieces. Unfortunately, that's when you will learn that a few decent lenses will cost almost as much as the telescope did. The good news is that it is upgradeable...so a better viewing experience can be had if desired. 4Telescope is fine, but mount works poorly and makes it difficult to use The images are sharp, very good for the price. The problem is the mount. It has what I will call elasticity. When I make a small adjustment, it springs back to where it was before I made it, in both planes. To actually make a small adjustment, I have to move it farther so it will spring back to just where I want it, and I have not mastered this art. Further, when tracking a planet, it is necessary to make constant adjustments to keep it in the field of view, which is very difficult given the limitations of the mount.I MIGHT buy this again, but only after carefully reading reviews of it and competing products and finding that no competitors, even at considerably higher prices, were better. 3
