No Hiss Now (was only due to pilot error)I bought this to replace a 10-year-old Radio Shack device that I finally just got tired of having to minutely push/pull the headphone jack until it was just exactly in the right spot so that I'd have both ears of the headset delivering sound. The plug needed to be just about 1/16th of an inch pulled out from a firmly-seated position. For or the price of his Manhattan device, it was worth seeing if I could be free of this annoyance. At first, I was disappointed with this device for the speaker and/or headphone hiss was unbearable. However, poking around on the internet (there are no detailed instructions supplied for this device as it is just so easily put into use, generally), I discovered others had a similar problem with hiss and their PC's sound. I found and followed this helpful advice which immediately eliminated the hiss:Given the hiss is distortion, lower the level of the microphone all the way down and raise the master volume of the computer up. (It was also advised that one could just fine the little speaker volume icon in the system tray to bring up the audio controls and adjust from there, quickly.I find now the device works beautifully. I can use it clearly with Dragon Naturally Speaking (as I am now dictating this review) as well as with online gaming and am told my voice is clear and at the proper volume.I also like the little volume control right on this hub and also how you can separately mute the microphone, switch between headset and computer speakers, and choose to have the microphone active while using the computer speakers instead of the headset. I have not used the 2.5 jack for phone, nor do I think that will be something I'd really need. The construction, I agree with some reviewers, could be more robust, but given I'm pretty careful while using any of my devices, I'm hoping this hub continues to work flawlessly for me.If it breaks in the future, I'll return here and update my review, but so far, I am enjoying this device fully. Just as a side note, I'm using this with my Logitech G330 Gaming Headset, which is by far the most comfortable headset I've ever used. This combo of devices makes dictating long pieces for my business a joy. 5GREAT SWITCHING AUDIO HUB!!!This item works exactly as advertised. I had a setup where I was feeding a computer audio output to set of powered computer speakers near the computer, and also to a TV some distance away (through a long VGA/audio cable). I tried a Y-connector for the audio output from the computer (one output to the speakers and one to the TV audio), but found that I was receiving annoying popping/noise/static on the computer speakers with the TV off. With this hub connected to the computer, I plugged the powered speaker input into the 'Speaker plug in' jack of the hub, and the TV audio input into the 'headphone' jack of the hub.(I didn't use (or need) the microphone jack, since my sound card doesn't have a microphone input. Didn't use the 'Handsfree' jack either.) Now I am able to select either the powered speakers or TV audio. No more noise on the speakers with the TV off! I don't use the Volume control (I leave it at maximum), but the control works if needed. I've been using the hub for a week and so far I am very happy with this product. 5Great for gamers that want to switch between speaker or ...Great for gamers that want to switch between speaker or headphones/gaming headset when gaming. Had one of these for two years and still kicking. Simple device that makes your life a lot easier.... stick it to the side of your desk/table and just switch back and forth effortlessly.UPDATE 6/21/17I'm purchasing a new one, mine has started to have some issues with the Speaker/Headset button when switching between them. I have to tap it sometimes so both Right and Left speaker have sound and little things like that. Great device anyways and it lasted for more than two years with a lot of daily use so I am more than happy to buy another one to replace the old one. 5Works As Advertised; Not So Durable - Updated 3.6-year ReviewITEM PURCHASED in 2015; Review UPDATED July 2019===========================================ORIGINAL REVIEW:This thing works. I wanted a device to enable switching between headset and speakers, and couldn't find one that did that only. This switching hub came the closest,Why do gadget designers feel they have to add tons of extras onto their gadgets? Why can't we find simple gadgets that just do the one thing we want and do it well?Besides having an audio output switch, this Manhattan Switching Hub also has a volume control, AND a headset switcher, including a mic input. I can't tell you how those other things work, because I'm only using the audio output switch, and so far, with about three weeks use, it's working just fine. The only reason I'm rating this four stars instead of five is that the button that switches from one device to the other is "mushy." It just feels indefinite. While there is tactile feedback to the button's being either up or down, there is no definite "click" when you switch from one to the other, and quite often I have to double check as to whether I've truly activated the switch.Knowing what I know about it now, would I buy it again? Probably, but only if I couldn't find a better one (with a good switch button) or one that did only what I wanted without all the extras.=====================================================ADDITIONAL REVIEW, July 2019I have now had this device almost four years, and have used it almost every day. For about 3 of those years, it worked fine. However, over the last several months, it has begun to degrade and now I'm searching for a replacement switch.WHAT WENT WRONG: There must be corrosion in the switch, or it is simply wearing out, because I have to jiggle the switch whenever I change the position to get the audio to come through both channels. It used to take only 3 seconds of jiggling and all was fine, but now even after half a minute of wriggling the switch once it's reset in the new position, it's still a crap shoot whether I will get audio in both channels, and often one or both of the channels will have crackling-static as well as the audio I want.On the plus side, the gadget isn't all that expensive at less than $20. But on the other hand, even at that price point, I would expect a device that would stand up to more than 4 years of being used as intended. Now that I'm looking for this device's replacement, will I buy another one of these? Probably not. 4Super-simple tool that does the job perfectlySuper simple device, but does exactly what I needed it to do. I've seen very few tools like this on the market. I like listening to music over my computer, through external speakers, but I use the same computer as my office phone (VOIP sofware - Cisco Jabber) - so I've got a headset for calls. This device allows me to switch between the speaker output and the headset with the push of a button. I couldn't really figure out any other way to configure this within windows, short of unplugging the speaker and plugging in the headset, which was a pretty unmanageable method for incoming calls. The only addition that I'd like would be to have an active microphone available tied to the speaker selection, so that I could answer calls as a speaker-phone or switch to headset. I searched and I've found nothing that had that capability. It would be an easy addition to add an external mic option when the speakers are selected, and I'd buy that version. But, this is still a huge improvement over any other options that I've found. 5Great unit to switch between my PC speakers and headphonesGreat unit to switch between my PC speakers and headphones! Uses mini 3.5 stereo connectors and comes with a male to PC (green) for the speaker and one for a PC to mic (pink). The velcro provided made a nice mount on my desk without drilling. Just set your PC volume to high and control all your volume and on/off function for the sound (does NOT control your speaker power). 5Serves the purpose and more! The main reason I bought this is because I wanted to connect my headphones along with my tv wireless Sennhieser RS 120 II to the TV and switch between them with a click on a button. That is exactly what this product did and I am very happy with it!It was very hard to find this product in the market here as it is very old technology so just buy it online and don't waste your time looking for it 5Works great, no loss of audio quality, and even a little bonus.I bought this because the headphone jack on my PC broke and I didn't want to buy a whole new case or have to crawl behind the tower every time I wanted to use headphones. It works great! plug it into the back of the computer and one button press switches between the two outputs (one to speakers, one to headphones). There is absolutely no loss of audio quality when going through the switch. There's even a volume control on it, which I don't necessarily find useful because I control the volume with the operating system, but some might like that feature. As a bonus, it even comes with a piece of adhesive velcro. That's a really small thing, but mounting the device is something a lot of people might not consider when they buy it, so it's nice that they included it. I mounted it under the corner of my desk so it's out of sight, but really easy to access.5 stars!UPDATE: it's 2 years later, and the device has started to show signs of wear. It still works fine, but adjusting the volume frequently causes the audio to sputter a bit, and I need to fiddle with it to get it to come in clear again. It's not a major issue, just a minor annoyance. Still, for the $15 I paid for it, it lasted 2 years, and that's pretty good. 5A neat and inexpensive solution.I am sure a lot of people want to be easily able to switch between earphones and speakers on their computer but there just are not many options. Those I had found before this were plug ugly and three times the cost. This one is priced right, is not ugly even if not gorgeous and works just right. I was just looking to be able to press a button to switch between headphones and speakers and I got that plus volume control. There is also an input for a mic with and on off switch as well as an input for hands free whatever that might be. 5I've had bad experiences with cheap external volume controls/switchesI've had bad experiences with cheap external volume controls/switches, they typically are poorly shielded, causing your sound quality to tank dramatically. That hasn't been this case with this little wonder: It does exactly what I want it to with no noticeable loss in audio quality or volume.I imagine if you have very expensive headphones there might be a quality drop, but if you're the type of person to drop multiple hundreds of dollars on one pair of headphones, you probably know enough that you should be buying a real amp instead of something like this.My only honest complaint is the dated early 2000s look. It works perfectly though, so I can put up with it being a minor eyesore on my desk. 5
