Customer Reviews

Install Tips or Guide for Dummies Like MeThese are great speakers, the tweeter can be directed after installation or at any time without removal of the metal cover grill. Very powerful speakers that provide excellent sound and finish quality. I purchased the 8" ones and glad I did over the smaller ones. I was worried about appearance, but painting them before installation, made them almost disappear into the ceiling.Never installed these before, here is what I learned in the process:1). To remove metal cover grill: Sit on couch, invert speaker onto lap, swing locking clips toward center, push top of tab to force off metal cover grill while holding speaker just off your lap. POP!2. Paint metal cover grill and outer plastic flange before installing. I used a small roller (light paint saturation) to match texture of ceiling. Do two coats. Use a big needle or small tack to clear any paint-filled holes. Once painted, they almost disappear into the ceiling.3. Make a fist sized hole in the center of where you plan to have your speakers and reach in to confirm that you don't hit any rafters or blocking BEFORE you make your larger cut-out. You may be unpleasantly surprised and may need to shift your location, so don't make the big hole until you are sure all is clear. The clip/locking tabs need clearance all around (about 1/2").4. Paper cut-out template provided is a bit undersized (thank you Pyle for making it sturdy cardboard and pre-cut), they probably imagine self-installers are not so careful. Cut it atleast 1/8" bigger all around.5. To avoid damage to your finished sheetrock during cut-out operation: use a dremel tool to cut thru the paper layer of the sheetrock completely or do multiple passes with a mat knife. Otherwise you risk spalling off large chips of sheetrock which you don't want to patch back. To reseat any chips flaked during agressive sawing, keep elmers glue handy to patch back smaller chips on the finished side as you go. Then drill out a 3/8" or larger hole in center and near edges to insert your sheetrock saw.6. Most likely you will cut the sheetrock slightly off-vertical on the cut line, so use your saw and go back to straighten the cuts.7. Carefully wash you hands before final installation of speaker.8. Test each speaker before installation. **This probably should be item #1.You won't regret doing this work (less than an hour not counting crawling thru the attic), the payoff of these speakers is huge. Verisimilitude confirmed when all our pets completely freaked out by the quality of the surround sound for very low investment. Enjoy. 5Not for the type of people that blast music/movies so the neighbors can hear it, hopefully you're not that kind of person.Cons: Your audiophile friend will give you lots of cons about these speakers; they sound just okay.Pros: Price. It will also discourage you from inviting your audiophile friend over; he's a d0uche anyway. 3Easy to install, good sound.I mounted these in the ceiling as rear surround speakers. They were easy to install and sound great. I use them with video games and movies. Hearing lightening, or sword fighting, or whatever behind me is very cool. The sound is very prominent and it sounds really good. I do not use them with music, do I cannot comment on that. The one and only issue that I had was that they are advertised as 4-8 Ohm impedance. So, it is 4 Ohm or 8 Ohm? I called for clarification. If you hook it up normally, it is 8 Ohm. If you wire it in in parallel with another speaker, it is 4 Ohm. Advertising them as 4-8 is goofy and confusing. They are 8 Ohm speakers. 5Thinner sound compared to other Polk speaker. Died in 6 monthsI installed 2 of these speakers to go with my other home ceiling speakers. My hope was to get good sound and not pay as much as I had previously. I am comparing these to Polk speakers that I spent $90-100 for each speaker. These were much cheaper. I'm not an audiophile but the sound difference is readily apparent. If this is all your current budget has for speakers then it may work out for you. My biggest problem was that one of the speakers died 6 months after install. My money saving project is now costing me more than I hoped and will have to reinstall new ones. 2Surprised they sound as good as they do Great Value - Here s some tips - Grill solutionsI installed these speakers yesterday. Use the metal clip that comes with the speakers to get the grills off lift one side half way out then lift the opposite side of the grill and they come off easy. REAL EASY. To put the grills on carefully line it up with the installed speaker and one side should go in very easy but only go half way in or so. Take a sheetrock knife and with the razor blade GENTLY pry in the grille and press in gently as you go around the edge go slow and steady - put the grill in half way or so - when you get it completely in press up on two sides of the speaker and the grill will easily go in flush. It didn t take hours. The grill comes off in 30 seconds and it took less than a minute to get the grill back on. Use your head. Don t put the grill in fully on one side thinking that s the way to do it by trying to jam the opposite side in. It isn t you will only bend the grill. One of the worst things in the world to be is a GRILL BENDER. You do NOT want to bend the grill or have your neighbors calling you GB so take your time and like I wrote GO GENTLY. Use a sheet rock knife and use some logic or things most likely will get frustrating and you will screw it all up. Last thing, adjust the tweeter with one finger AFTER the grill is on.Sound wise for $37 - I was really surprised they actually were alright sounding - and now I understand the massive mark-up on speakers. These puppies hold their own. You will not be disappointed. Sound just fine cranked up and at lower volumes. The highs could be a little cleaner and the bass lower but come on for $37 bucks. They sound like you paid 3x - 4x that amount. So don t be afraid to dip you toes in the water with these speakers GREAT VALUE. They are much more than fine for most applications. I put them in my kitchen ceiling to rock out when I m cooking and when I have guests over. Very happy with the purchase. 4Dangerous! Plastic assembly crumbles and speaker can fall out of the ceiling!Really sad story about these great sounding speakers...As was outlined by several other reviewers here, I have had problems with brittle, crumbling plastic material that surrounds the these in-ceiling speakers! I have had to replace 4 speakers that were located in the ceiling of an outdoor covered patio. I live in hot Arizona so I was willing to blame the heat somewhat but still I have never seen this with any other speakers. These Pyle speakers literally fell out of the ceiling (3 of the 4)!What really has me upset is that the 1st symptom of this problem is usually the grill falling from the speaker. This happened this weekend in our dinning room ceiling. While pushing the grill back into place the entire plastic speaker assembly crumbled and the speaker nearly fell to the floor. Luckily I caught it!This is unacceptable and renders these speakers both useless and dangerous if installed in a ceiling. I will not be purchasing more of these as replacements. I am hoping Pyle will respond to my unhappiness with their product. I do not recommend anyone buy these especially if they plan for in-ceiling installation. Please refer to my included photos. 3Surprisingly great quality!I put these on my back patio to run on the B channel of my Onkyo receiver. I am quite the audiophile, I have a Suburban with over 2000watts of Cerwin Vega audio equipment. The highs on these speakers are crisp and clear and there's actually a significant amount of clean midbass from them. It might be the insulation that is behind the speakers, but it turned out nicely. Very happy with this purchase and install was a breeze- even came with a cut-out template. I did a little torture test- turned the volume all the way up and there was no noticeable distortion from the speakers. These are going to be great for our summer pool parties in the back yard. 5Great Speakers! Be prepared to use an Equalizer and ...Great Speakers! Be prepared to use an Equalizer and add a good Subwoofer.... Once you dial things in sit back and smile! Don't expect these things to perform laying on your desk, get em in the ceiling where they belong and you won't be dissapointed. I don't care what kind of wall speaker you select.... Expect nice performance but the icing on the cake is some EQ'ing and a Subwoofer... 5Great buy!I installed 12 of these in a large room driven by 2 1000 watt iNuke amps (3 speakers per channel wired parallel = 2.7 /channel). They sound great for both PA and music/movie applications. Good speakers for the money!I installed them on 24"x24" ceiling tiles, and I cut 23"x23" 3/8" plywood to keep the tiles from sagging. I just used the speaker's built in clamping devices to hold the sandwiches together. Easy to install, and they look good, too.My only problem was that Pyle would only let me order 5 pair at a time, so I had to wait for the first 5 to show before I could order the last pair. 4Nice Speakers, worst grill design ever. They sound really good for the money paid, however getting the grill off and back on again was the most difficult thing I have ever experienced for an in-wall/in-ceiling speaker. I dread if I ever have to get them back off again. It took me an hour to get both grills back on the speakers and had to somewhat reshape the edges to get them to fit back in. I would not have purchased these had I known it would be this difficult to install the grill. 2
